This sort of composition can make for a compelling portrait, but the problem is that in order to avoid blowing highlights, you need to expose for the sky, which will often underexpose your subject. Adding a bit of subtle flash can balance the overall exposure and help keep you from having to perform extreme adjustments in post that can negatively affect image quality.
