Learn How This Incredible Portrait Was Lit and Photographed

Generally, you shoot a portrait with either continuous lights or a flash, but not both. What happens when you mix them, though? You enable some pretty incredible creative possibilities. Check out this fantastic video tutorial that will show you how to shoot an eye-catching portrait using a mixture of continuous lights and flash.

Coming to you from John Gress, this awesome video tutorial will show you how he shot a striking golfer senior portrait using a combination of continuous light and flash. As you will see, Gress is using continuous LED lights mounted on the golf club to trace the arc of the swing, surrounding the subject in colorful ring. However, these are far from enough to light the subject. The problem is that with a two-second exposure with the subject moving, continuous lighting on the subject would just result in a blurry mess. So, Gress adds flash with rear curtain sync, which freezes the subject at the end of the swing, rather than the beginning. It's quite a creative and fun shot. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Gress.
