Green iguanas (Iguana iguana) are fascinating reptiles native to Central and South America, known for their vibrant green color, though they can shift to shades of orange, blue, or brown depending on mood, temperature, or health. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on leaves, flowers, and fruits, with a digestive system that efficiently processes plant matter. Green iguanas can grow up to 6 feet long, including their powerful tails, which they use for defense and balance. They are excellent climbers and swimmers, often found in trees near water, and can drop from heights of up to 40 feet without injury. Their third “parietal” eye on top of their head detects light and movement, aiding in predator avoidance. Green iguanas are also known for their social behaviors, like head-bobbing to communicate, and can live up to 20 years in captivity with proper care.
