Lubber Grasshopper

These are two different insects of the same species. The second shot shows the grasshopper that had an unfortunate event at some point during its life and lost a rear leg severely limiting its ability to hop.

Description:

The lubber grasshopper is a large, slow-moving insect native to the southeastern United States, especially Florida. Known for its vivid coloration—often bright yellow, orange, or red with black markings—this grasshopper uses its bold appearance as a warning to predators, as it contains toxic compounds that make it unpalatable. Commonly seen in the Everglades, lubber grasshoppers are flightless and rely on their size and chemical defenses for protection.
