The Battle of Buçaco was a turning point when Lord Wellington’s Anglo-Portuguese army was attacked five times by 65,000 French troops in 1810, but the British field marshal defeated them despite being outnumbered. Napoleon Bonaparte had ordered his army to march towards Lisbon, and the forest-covered mountains near Buçaco provided a natural defence against invading forces.
Lord Wellington stayed at the convent below the hilltop – which later became the Palace Hotel of Buçaco – and where they also served food to his troops. Memorials to the Anglo-Portuguese alliance can be found throughout the hotel.
