I had just watched the sun disappear into the Pacific from Bodega Head when I noticed the full moon rising above the trees. I pulled over, wanting to photograph the moon against the landscape while some of the day's last light still remained.
I climbed the small rise in front of me, and that's when I saw him. A buck standing quietly among the dry California grasses. He saw me about the same time I saw him.
The photograph I had stopped for suddenly became a different photograph altogether. Sometimes the best image is the one you didn't know was waiting for you.
