German-based photographer Olli Waldhauer has started a social media campaign protesting hate speech using breasts. Guess what? It’s working, and not because Facebook is taking down hate speech but because of its war against the female nipple.
I’m sure all of you are very aware of Facebook’s policy on female nipples (cue intro scene of “Pineapple Express”). Essentially, it's a zero tolerance policy involving nudity. Facebook has been under fire for allowing various forms of hate speech to exist, yet intently policing nipples in photos. Waldhauer’s protest is including hateful images paired with breasts, seeing them disappear within hours, on the grounds of violating Facebook’s nudity policy.
Waldhauer wants the images to be banned for the race-baiting content, not for the breasts. In September, Facebook announced it would start working with the German government to reduce xenophobic content, but is still catching criticisms. If you want to follow along the hashtag created for the movement, it is #nippelstatthetze, or “nipples instead of race-baiting.” You can see that other photographers have turned to Photoshop to join in movement:
