“I strongly believe being a volunteer saved my life when I came home. It really allows you to help people and allows you to join a group that wants to help people. It’s not war or anything like that, going to a house fire or extricating someone from a vehicle that’s been flipped over, it gives you a purpose pretty much. It gives you a time to wake up. You can make a difference on a daily basis, whether it’s with kids or fundraising in the department or working with churches. The sky is the limit. There is an unlimited potential to help people. That and it was able to focus my mind off of, you know, why did things happen to my buddies, why didn’t they happen to me or vice versa? It was able to take my attention away from overseas and build on something I can help here in the US.”
