Ever since I was a kid, I've always loved tall buildings. The tallest building in my hometown was about three stories, so my love went unrequited for a while. Every time I went to a city and went up in a tall building, I just wanted to get higher and higher and higher. I wanted to be up in the clouds and looking down on all the people below who were no longer tall and intimidating and harsh to my little 9-year-old self. I wanted to see everything at once, be able to recognize every inch of the city form all the way up at the top of the Sears Tower. I wanted to know what it felt like to see 2.7 million people living their lives all at once.
