Made in Somalia

This is a street portrait I did of a young girl I subsequently started documentary work on. She is a first generation immigrant from Somalia. At nine I found her face absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. This image was taken outside. Another child from Somalia was to my right and I directed them to hold a large reflector. Behind my model stood the model's sister. I asked her to spread her skirt so we could use the colors (pink and brown) as a back drop since the neighborhood was barren and not the look I was going for. I like to use hands in my portraits so I asked her to pose with a hand. This was what she gave me.
