Break of Dawn

Our guide invited us to his secret spot that he visits whenever he wants some peace and quiet. It started with an hour drive while it was still dark going to this rural village in Guilin. When we arrived we started a steep climb crawling from rock to rock, ledge to ledge, in the dark lit only by our head lamps until we arrived at a clearing halfway up the mountain. The winds here are mild and cold. We rested for a few minutes then we started to set up our gear while our guide prepared hot coffee and some snacks, shared stories while waiting for sunrise.

Then there was light... the pastel hues of that cold morning revealed the serene vista of the valley and fields below with the jagged mountains of Guilin as backdrop. All the pains of the lack of sleep and climbing went away.

These are the things and experiences we landscape photographers miss most during these times. We just have to cherish the memories for now. 😊
