La Palma is a relatively small volcanic island and part of the Canary Islands. Particularly among astrophysicists, the island is world-famous because it offers the best conditions for exploring our cosmos. Far away from large cities and due to a unique set of laws to protect the night sky from light pollution, the island known as "Isla Bonita" became the world's first starlight reserve. This makes it one of the best places in the world to observe the starry sky.
This photo was taken in the far south and shows the cinder cone of a comparatively small and insignificant volcano. It was nevertheless a perfect subject because the galactic core of the Milky Way rose right above it. The reddish glow on the left of the picture belongs to some lights on the neighbouring island of Tenerife. The green and yellow glow in the middle and further to the right, on the other hand, is called airglow. This is a natural glow that is created in the thermosphere by light emissions from atoms and molecules that are excited by chemical processes. Unfortunately, the colours in the night sky, both in the Milky Way and the airglow, are not visible to the naked eye. Nevertheless, the Milky Way itself was clearly visible due to the dark environment!
