"Roof top" Luma Arles

Luma Arles is an artistic and cultural complex initiated by Maja Hoffmann's Luma Foundation in Arles, France. The complex is being realized on an abandoned industrial site that Maja Hoffmann acquired in 2010. The centerpiece of the architecture is a 56 m high irregular tower that is visible from afar and was designed by Frank Gehry; according to the planner's ideas, it is intended to reflect the landscape and sky. The location of the deconstructivist-style tower met with resistance from the local population and had to be moved further to the outskirts of the city. The cost of the Arts Resource Building, its official name, is estimated at up to 150 million euros. The base of the tower is a glass circular structure that pays homage to the Roman amphitheater. The jagged shapes above are reminiscent of the limestone cliffs of the nearby Alpilles. These are clad with 11,000 stainless steel rhombuses, which reflect the light of the south in facets thanks to their inclined placement. Depending on the time of day and the angle of reflection of the façade elements, the available light is reflected back in changing shades of color.
