Caution Slippery When … Cold? / Dry Lake Playa, Mohave Desert

Dispersed camping allow us the be on site at sunrise. To make up for the time saved we were met with down right fridge temperatures. Arriving at the dry lake playa shore at dawn I step off to explore and boom, I hit the ground and hard no simple fall. What the f’ck. The sky was clear the air and ground was dry. Bewildered I got up and took another step and down again. Still a hard fall but at least I was prepared for it, it wasn’t the shock of the first. Dang that’s slippery as I got up again, it wasn’t making any sense. Hadn’t it been for my winter layering I don’t know if I would have been as persistent in pushing on. In time I learned not to lift either foot from the playa surface, nor slide my feet anywhere close to my normal stride. The best I can do to describe what I experienced other than that deer strand out on a frozen lake legs slipping and sliding every which way, not even close and I only had two legs. It was like I was learning to walk on ice with roller skates with no roller skate experience.
