Extranger Shapes

fter exploring much of southern Utah last year, we decided to change course and head into New Mexico, continuing our journey with camera in hand. Some of the places we visited were well-known, but others—like this corner of the Bisti Badlands—felt almost secret, like something out of another world.
I originally came in search of a specific formation, the King of Wings, but along the way, I stumbled upon this scene that completely stopped me in my tracks. The afternoon light was beginning to shift, casting long shadows and revealing details in the rock formations that made for truly unique compositions. So I put the map away for a moment and let the landscape lead the way.
Photographing places like this isn't just about capturing an image; it’s about having the patience to wait for the right light, to notice the small details, and to move through the environment with care and respect. Bisti is massive, and a single trip isn’t nearly enough to take it all in. Every corner seems to hold its own visual story.
This place definitely deserves a second (maybe even third) visit. There’s something about the silence, the raw geology, and the shifting light that calls you back—camera in hand.

I really like the compositions, and light effects.

Thank you so much
