Zoom lenses have made some remarkable advancements, but that does not mean primes have stagnated in the meantime. Canon's 28-70mm f/2L USM is one of the most impressive zooms in a long time, blurring the line between prime and zoom, while their RF 85mm f/1.2L USM sets the standard for 85mm portrait lenses. So, can the 28-70mm f/2L take the place of the 85mm f/1.2L, or does it still hold a special place all its own?

I have had the 28-70mm f/2L for about a year now, and it has handily replaced several primes lenses in my bag with its combination of versatility, image quality, and extremely wide maximum aperture (for a zoom). Still though, the 85mm f/1.2L has long been known for being something of a magical lens, and the RF version has been lauded for really increasing the sharpness, particularly wide open, while still retaining the magical three-dimensional pop and character of the original.
