As anyone browsing Fstoppers articles knows, practicing photography comes with a hefty price tag. Cameras, lenses, and lighting gear are investments that deserve protection. Even in the safety of a home studio or home office setup, while break-ins may be rare for many, the risk of accidents or unexpected visitors can threaten valuable equipment. That’s where the IMILAB C30 Dual 3K+3K Indoor Security Camera shines, offering sharp surveillance with one lens fixed on critical gear and another tracking room activity. Curious how this budget-friendly camera can safeguard a photographer’s workspace? Read on to find out why this photographer thinks it’s a must-have.
A photographer’s kit becomes an extension of themselves, and precious tools deserve to be treated as such by being kept under lock and key, still monitored while not in use. Equipment insurance is a vital step in protecting your gear, of course, but the cost of replacing stolen equipment is far more than just monetary. This is where the need for preventative measures arises.
I decided that I needed an indoor security camera, not because I’ve ever had equipment stolen, nor because I live in a high-crime area, but because prevention is better than cure. My home photography workspace is tucked into a corner of my home, and when not in use, that equipment could be vulnerable to accidents, pets or children entering the room unsupervised, or the rare chance of an opportunistic intruder. The IMILAB C30 Dual 3K+3K Indoor Security Camera appealed to me as both a deterrent and a monitoring tool. Its presence alone, positioned opposite the entrance door, signals that my studio is watched, discouraging any potential mischief. The advanced features let me keep tabs on my gear in real time, ensuring peace of mind no matter where I am.
Dual-Lens Versatility for Complete Studio Coverage
The IMILAB C30's standout feature is its dual-lens system, each delivering crisp 3K video. This resolution is enough to capture small details with impressive clarity. The bottom lens stays fixed, which you might want to point toward the door, or toward your most precious equipment items. The top lens rotates 355 degrees horizontally and tilts 60 degrees vertically, together providing full 360° coverage to track any movement in the room. This dual setup is ideal for my home workspace. If I am not in the studio, whether I’m just in the next room, in the garden, or away from home, the IMILAB C30 ensures I’m always connected to my studio via their easy-to-use app.
Sharp Imaging in Any Light
The IMILAB C30 Dual Security Camera handles different lighting situations well, from capturing detail when I’m shooting with bright LED lighting to low-light scenarios with full-color night vision that needs minimal light to produce vivid footage. Equipped with 10 infrared lights per lens, it keeps my gear visible even in near darkness, perfect for evening editing sessions and beyond, checking in after hours. The 3K resolution outshines standard 1080p cameras, letting me spot the small stuff.
Smart AI That Suits a Home Studio
While this is actually designed for pet or baby monitoring, the IMILAB C30 Dual Security Camera’s AI features adapt well to my studio needs. It detects human movement and loud noises, alerting me to unexpected activity—like something falling or someone forcing the door. Instant notifications are sent through the Mi Home app, keeping me informed. The “virtual fence” feature is very handy. For example, this enables photographers to earmark an equipment shelf as a high-priority zone, prioritizing alerts for critical areas.
The Best Feature
Of course, the surveillance camera does what you would expect it to, but as I was scrolling through the notification settings in the app, I came across the Fire Detection setting, currently in beta testing. This gives an added layer of protection and peace of mind with an eye on the space while away from home. Naturally, a fire or smoke alarm is the best tool in fire detection. However, if you are not at your studio, you will not hear it, so an alert from the IMILAB C30 Camera when fire is detected will allow you to call the fire services at an early stage, and allow you to monitor the situation should fire ever occur. This feature currently does not work in night vision mode, but daytime fire detection is an unexpected plus.
Easy Setup and Practical Features
Setting up the IMILAB C30 took just a few minutes using the Xiaomi Mi Home app, where I connected the camera to my Wi-Fi network and adjusted custom sensitivity settings. In terms of choosing a location to install the camera, I have simply placed it on a ledge in the studio, but the included wall mount offers flexibility for ceiling-mounted setups. The adjustable design lets me aim the fixed lens at my gear while the rotating lens scans the room.
Flexible Storage and Privacy Options
The IMILAB C30 supports a MicroSD card (up to 256 GB, sold separately) for local storage, which I use for 24/7 recording without the burden of subscription costs. It’s a great option for tracking all studio activity. For cloud storage, IMILAB offers a 90-day trial, with paid plans starting at $4.99/month for 7 days of event history. The privacy mode, which disables the feed when activated, is perfect for any client visits to my home studio, and encrypted video ensures security.
What I Liked
The IMILAB C30 has met my expectations and provided the coverage and peace of mind needed, including the bonus of fire and smoke detection. The dual-lens system is a highlight, allowing photographers to keep one lens fixed on key areas, such as an equipment shelf, while the other rotates to track any movement, offering complete coverage in a studio or workspace environment. The 3K resolution captures every detail with clarity that makes it easy to spot any issue or capture clear face details. The infrared night vision ensures that your gear is visible even in low light or near darkness. I also appreciate the local storage option via MicroSD, which delivers smart alerts without requiring a subscription, keeping costs down. The two-way audio could be useful, allowing communication remotely with anyone in the studio. For now, I have only used the two-way audio to tell my dog to get out. Finally, the easy setup and compatibility with Alexa and Google Assistant make it a seamless addition to your home studio workflow.
What I Didn’t Like
I am based in the UK; however, the device was sent with a US plug—not a huge issue since I was able to swap to a spare UK plug head with USB connection.
The camera is wired, which is no different from the indoor cameras offered by the market leader of home monitoring cameras; however, for anyone thinking of ceiling mounting their camera, this might not be ideal.
Final Thoughts
At $69.99, the IMILAB C30 Dual Camera presents good value for security within a home photography studio. Its dual-lens design, sharp 3K imaging, and smart AI detection provide robust protection for my gear while monitoring the entire space. The fixed lens guards critical equipment, the rotating lens tracks movement, and the app and voice controls make it easy to use. For photographers running a home studio, this camera delivers security at an affordable price.
For anyone with commercial studio premises away from home, I would advise a hardwired CCTV system to monitor the building and its contents, but as an additional security measure, this camera is useful indoors in a wide range of places and spaces.
Disclaimer
I ensure no equipment worth stealing is left in easy-to-access locations or in my home studio overnight, minimizing risk to my gear.

Well, even if that was legal in my country, I would still prefer to have an eye on my gear when I wasnt there.
