Perhaps no lens is more ubiquitous than the 24-70mm f/2.8. A versatile performer, the 24-70mm f/2.8 is equally at home in a huge range of genres, making it a favorite workhorse of many different photographers. However, such lenses can often be rather expensive. So, at $1,100, can the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art compete with the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, which costs more than twice as much? This excellent video comparison takes a look at both.
Coming to you from Josh Sattin, this great video comparison takes a look at the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art and Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II lenses. Unsurprisingly, as a member of the company's respected G Master series, the Sony option offers impressive performance and image quality, but when you consider that the Sigma costs less than half, it certainly warrants a look. And sure enough, the Sigma offers comparable image quality and performance. Nonetheless, the Sony does edge it out slightly in a few areas like autofocus speed and weight, but when it comes to performance for price, the Sigma definitely takes the crown. One thing is for sure: you'll likely be satisfied with either lens. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Sattin.
The Sony is a lot better. The Sigma is half the price.
I have tested my copy of the Sigma vs the GM II on my A7RIV. At almost all focal lengths and apertures the GM II is a bit sharper as expected. They are equal at 70mm though. For my use case of studio portraits with flash I decided to stick with my Sigma Art. If I was primarily shooting landscapes though I would have upgraded. The GM II is the better lens but for me not worth double the cost.

At F2.8 there is a huge difference.
I own the Sigma and couldn't be happier for the price. Only saw images from the GM, they are a bit sharper, but it's double the price, so I wouldn't expect any less from it. For anyone that doesn't do photography for a living I recommend going with the Sigma every day of the week. It's superb.
I’ll never buy Sigma zooms again. The sharpness isn’t there. Primes are good, just dang heavy.
