Can the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Keep Up With More Expensive Options?

The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is a lens that offers a lot for its price. It's in a competitive space, though, so can it keep up?

Coming to you from Pav SZ, this informative video highlights the new features of the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2. The updated model includes built-in optical stabilization, a new external design with customizable buttons, and a USB-C socket for lens customization. Furthermore, the improved autofocus system and optics further make this lens a worthy upgrade from its predecessor.

The lens delivers excellent sharpness and contrast, even in challenging lighting conditions. While it does soften slightly at 180mm at minimum focusing distance, this is easily rectified by adjusting the aperture. This minor issue does not overshadow the lens's overall performance. The minimum focusing distance of 30 cm at 70mm and 85 cm at 180mm offers great flexibility. Additionally, the autofocus works flawlessly and silently, making it ideal for both photography and video.

The lens' optical design minimizes chromatic aberration, flaring, and ghosting, ensuring high-quality images. The bokeh produced is smooth, with some roundness and swirling. For video, there's virtually no focus breathing, which is a significant advantage. The built-in optical stabilization helps achieve smoother video footage and longer exposures when shooting handheld.

The new design includes a customizable switch and focus hold button, as well as a USB-C port for direct connection to a computer. This allows easy firmware updates and customization through Tamron’s software. You can adjust the focus ring behavior and assign functions to the switch and button, making the lens highly adaptable to your shooting style.

Despite being slightly larger and heavier than the first version, this lens remains compact for its range. The zoom ring has the right amount of resistance, though the lens extends when zooming in. The dedicated zoom lock prevents accidental extension, however. It also features a 67mm filter thread and full weather-sealing, making it robust and reliable in various conditions.

In terms of value, the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 offers a compelling alternative to pricier options from Sony and Sigma. It retails for just over $1,200, which is significantly less than its competitors. Check out the video above for the full rundown.

My next lens. I have researched options in this area and it seems we're lucky to have some great choices: top of line but expensive Sony f2.8 option, great smaller and cheaper Sony f4 version but also Sigma & Tamron cheaper alternatives that apparently are quite close
