Tamron has announced the 25-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2, a second-generation all-in-one zoom lens designed for Sony E mount full frame mirrorless cameras.
The new 25-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 model succeeds the popular 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD, expanding the wide end from 28mm to 25mm while retaining the 200mm telephoto reach. Tamron says this updated version delivers improved optical performance, faster autofocus, and better ergonomics, while maintaining a compact and lightweight design.
The 25-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 features Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor, offering faster and more accurate autofocus for both stills and video. The lens also achieves a maximum magnification ratio of 1:1.9 at the 25mm end, enabling half-macro shooting for detailed close-ups.

Why It Matters
The 25-200mm f/2.8-5.6 G2 offers an unusually broad zoom range with a bright f/2.8 aperture at the wide end, which is rare in an all-in-one design. For hybrid shooters working in both photo and video, this lens could serve as a versatile travel or documentary tool, reducing the need to switch lenses in fast-paced environments. The addition of near-macro capabilities further broadens creative possibilities for content creators capturing everything from product details to nature close-ups.
The lens will cost $899 and is available for preorder now.

While the aperture is the same, the rate of darkening is increased. You're at 5.6 by 96mm. So the lens is actually slower for most focal lengths.
