hi, i tried the lens at our local camera store and brought the RAW files home. i also brought along my EF 35mm f1.4L ii and my RF 24-70mm f2.8L ISU. i found that without lens corrections in Adobe Lightroom that the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM has significant barrel distortion. i did not try the lens in video mode but feel that either of my two other lenses are better corrected optically. i did not have access to the latest version of Adobe Camera RAW. the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM image is above and the EF 35mm f1.4L ii image is in the middle and the RF 24-70mm f2.8L ISU image is at the bottom

Well this could be a very useful focal length for a lot of my close-up work in herpetology. But with a minimum focus distance of a whopping 11 inches and a very weak magnification ratio of 0.18x, it would be quite useless for anything I would want to use it for.

It'd be great if Canon could engineer a little more versatility into this lens, and make it capable of at least 0.45 magnification. Would it really take so much to reduce the MFD enough to accomplish that?
