If you’ve been keeping an eye on upcoming Canon announcements, there's one release rumored to significantly shake up the market. With increased resolution, powerful video upgrades, and improved autofocus on the horizon, this Canon model could make it worthwhile to reconsider whether your current gear still meets your needs.
The original Canon EOS R7 established itself as a capable choice, particularly for wildlife and sports. But with rapid advancements in camera technology, the R7 Mark II has a tough role—convincing users it's worth the upgrade or attracting those holding onto older DSLR models. Canon seems to recognize this, as leaks suggest the R7 Mark II will feature substantial improvements, not minor tweaks.
One of the standout rumors surrounding this camera is a potential jump to a 40 MP APS-C sensor. This would represent a notable resolution boost over the current 32.5 MP found in the EOS R7. If Canon delivers here, you’ll be able to crop tighter without losing sharpness, which is important given that many users choose the flagship APS-C series as a means of getting more reach for wildlife and sports photography without needing to spend on a high-price lens.
Beyond resolution, there's talk of significantly upgraded video capabilities. Specifically, the R7 Mark II is expected to shoot 8K video. Not many APS-C cameras on the market currently offer true 8K recording capabilities. While 8K might sound excessive for casual video use, its value is clear in professional settings, or when you want maximum editing flexibility—allowing significant cropping, stabilization, or reframing in post-production without sacrificing quality.
Another likely upgrade is improved autofocus performance. Canon's recent advancements in autofocus technology, especially subject tracking and detection, have been praised in higher-end models like the EOS R3. Bringing similar autofocus technology down to the R7 Mark II would make a noticeable difference over the already respected first version.
Finally, the arrival of the EOS R7 Mark II (which is expected later this summer) may also signal Canon’s renewed commitment to expanding its RF-S lens lineup. Many photographers have hesitated to fully commit to Canon’s APS-C mirrorless system due to a limited lens selection. Canon knows this, and releasing the R7 Mark II alongside new RF-S lenses could provide the reassurance you need to invest in their system confidently.
However, that's just the start of the exciting news. Check out Canon Rumors' article to see more of the exciting releases we can expect this year.
I have seen the 40MB rumor too, but most R7II rumors still keeps it at its current level of megapixels (but with a stacked sensor).
And I would probably also prefer optimizing for dynamic range, low light performance and general performance (like readout speed) rather than squeeze 40MP pixels onto an crop sensor.
It would be much more logical for the entire full-frame mirrorless range to move to at least 32 MP, right?
