UPDATED: Estimated arrival date released. In a stunning development, Sigma has placed the rumored 24-105mm on their website. I say stunning, because the whole of the Sigma USA team is on holiday today and we were never briefed on this lens officially (which is HIGHLY unusual, eg. this is the first time it's happened). This story is still developing, but the page is live and you can look at it yourself.

When Sarah Williams and I met up in Texas, we mentioned having a 35 Shoot off...since she had the Sigma and I had the Canon.
Never materialized though. I think she was scared of losing.
I doubt that lens would lose to the Canon.
At best it ties.
Not from what I've seen, but if it did so optically, it wins anyway at being $500-$600 cheaper.
The Sigma 50 f/1.4 is reputedly better than the offerings of Canon and Nikon but that, of course, is always subject to debate. For what it's worth, Sigma churns out a lot of good stuff that I wouldn't necessarily dismiss it without first seeing its output.
But this way I can check out that lens. I want that or the Canon version.

Not if it's a superior lens. The Canon lens is not that great, and obnoxiously overpriced.
Was hoping they'd offer something different than what's already out there...seems like now, they're just picking a fight ;)
personally, i hate lenses that don't zoom internally....too "kit lens" like....i know the nikon 24-70, 28-70, and 17-55 move in and out at the end, but at least the hood is huge, and stays put....Even the new Canon 24-70 2.8 version II is like this sigma...the whole hood and everything moves....looks stupid and introduces all kinds of spots for dirt/moisture to enter....
PLUS, Nikon zoom rings turn opposite of Canon...but when you buy a Sigma lens for a Nikon, the zoom ring turns like a Canon, and not a Nikon....for that reason alone, i'd never buy one....

Nope, the 18-50, new 18-35, and 70-200 all turn the "wrong" way for nikon.... assuming all the other zooms are the same way.....
That is not true. I have a sigma 70-200 and a nikon 24-70 and the zoom rings turn the same direction on both lenses. Did you ever stop to think that the one pictured could be the canon or sigma mount?
Ok, so why does the nikon mount 18-50, 24-70, and 120-300 all turn the "wrong" way for nikon?? Sigma cant make up their mind on how to make lenses...one more reason not to buy one...
yep, don't buy one because the zoom ring turns the 'wrong way'. Only really relevant for videographers, who no doubt wouldn't be fussed themselves.
Canon's version isn't that expensive. It's the perfect range so at 2.8 I would have bought two. Almost, Sigma....almost.
Look at everyone whinging about sigma offering their take on the 24-105. The canon version is getting old and poo now (replaced with my tack sharp beloved 24-70 f4L IS), and with sigmas current track record of recent lenses this may be a brilliant bang for buck lens. Ignoring all others whinging, thank you Sigma for at least bringing some new gear out for us equipment hoarders to play with. For people who want the extra reach (I do) that are bored of canons L-acklustre 24-105's super soft edges, this may be a winner.
P.S if it was 2.8, or 1.8 for that matter, on FF it would be stupid expensive. Then people would say 'I'm not paying that much for sigma blah blah'
I own and use a Canon version and am interested to find out how this lens compares. The Canon is old and dated and I hope that this version is a big enough improvement that it sparks Canon to get off their asses and make a Mark II. Or a 2.8 version. Areas that need improvement are image stabilization, focus acquisition, corner sharpness and, of course, a lower price would be nice.
And for what it's worth, I own 4 Sigma lenses, including the 18-35, f/1.8, and I'm a fan of their products as an alternative to Canon's.
Canons 24-70 f4L IS was the 24-105 replacement I'd say. While you lose 35mm of reach, it just produces leaps and bounds better images and the macro mode is actually damn good.
Canon also has a 24-70 f/2.8 so I'm wondering why you think this is the replacement of the 24-105 f/4L IS? Did Canon come out with a statement that they were no longer going to update this line? I wouldn't be surprised though given how many lenses they no longer produce like the 100-300, 80-200 to name a few but the 24-105 was a pretty popular lens so I think not updating/no longer supporting it would be a mistake.
What's so stunning about this lens. Just another 24 - 1xx f4 lens. Nikon (just to name one arbitrary brand) has such a lens in its lineup for quite a while ?
Sigma could stun the world if this lens had an optical image quality comparable to pro f2.8 lenses.

At 885 grams, this seems quite heavy for a f/4 lens. In contrast, the Nikon 24-120 f/4 and Canon 24-105mm f/4 weigh 710 and 670 grams respectively.
It's good with a little weight. Then it feels like a piece of quality product.
Interesting! I grabbed the Sigma 35 recently and LOVE it.. I also grabbed their 70-200 OS and LOVE it! This is coming from the guy who never thought going aftermarket was a good idea... As a hybrid hdslr shooter, the 24-105 is by far the best workhorse lens because of its focal range and the IS! I do agree that Canon's is grossly overpriced... which is probably why they practically give it away in all their kits... So hopefully Sigma acknowledges that and matches their kit pricing at least. Im stoked for what Sigma is doing all around here, they are really raising the bar for Canon and Nikon to pull up their panties! I don't see it being too far in the future, where the respectively rumoured 24-70 F2, and 70-200 F2's will be being released :) Now those are two bad boys i'll be getting! Now... hopefully they have IS on them... an HDSLR's dream. Thanks Sigma!
Looks good, but would love to have seen this focal range with a 2.8 aperture.
tameron has one Nice zoom lens 24-70mm 2.8 and stabilisation vc and it is good as Nikons in test and way better than sigmas but that is not any suprise
