Should You Be Chasing Photo Trends?

Social media is bigger than ever, and that means more photos are being posted than ever before. With all those images being posted, there can be some powerful trends, and it can be easy to wonder if you should be following them yourself in order to stay relevant. This insightful video essay discusses the issue and offers some thoughts on how closely we should follow the crowd.

Coming to you from Ben Harvey Photography, this great video essay discusses following trends as a photographer. This can be a tricky thing. I think if one is a hobbyist, there is no reason to feel any pressure to conform; you should find whatever your creative voice is an enjoy making work that makes you happy. If you are a professional, the issue is a bit more complex. Depending on what you shoot, you may need to stay up to date on trends and show to potential clients that you are versed in following them, all without upsetting the delicate balance of also having a unique creative voice. For example, wedding photographers will often be asked to replicate ideas that are popular at the moment, and thus, it pays for them to be aware of trends. Check out the video above for Harvey's full thoughts on the matter.
