Two boats, each with an artist on a journey through the rivers of Paris, Hamburg, Amsterdam, and all that's in between. Claudius Schulze and Maciej Markowicz take on a project to find new perspectives and experiences by traveling the channels and streams of Europe, and they call it “2Boats.”
Each boat serves as a traveling studio, but each has its own purpose. Schulze wants to host workshops and discussions, while Markowicz's boat is a camera obscura.
They've already been traveling since last year from Hamburg toward Amsterdam to attend the Unseen Photo Fair. On the way, they made it to Paris for the Annual Paris Photo Expo. They are currently on their way back to Hamburg for the Trienalle of Photography.
The Übermut Project is an initiative by visitBerlin and Hamburg Marketing and was funded by the German Foreign Office. They brought this project to life, and see themselves as a "place of shifting boundaries and the energy outside our comfort zones." It's a platform to send exciting artists on a year-long world tour to collaborate, and the 2Boats initiative is one of these projects.
I think the artistic search for new, unexplored places in the liminal space between cities and towns form new ideas and lends itself to untapped creative concepts. In this instance, the journey is the artwork that leads to new art and photography.
I think the only way to promote an idea is by humanizing it and making it interesting. Photographers reveal the unknown and they document it for others to see. This to me is a great campaign for visitBerlin and Hamburg Marketing to promote the idea of visiting these cities.
