Five Common Video Editing Mistakes

Creating a compelling, professional video is just as much in the editing as it is in the shooting process. Editing is a serious undertaking, and as such, it can be easy for things to go wrong. This great video tutorial details five common mistakes creatives make when editing video and what you can do to fix them or avoid them in the first place.

Coming to you from Zach Ramelan, this excellent video tutorial discusses five common mistakes creatives make when editing video and what you can do to remedy them. One I definitely see a lot is, as Ramelan puts it, "style over story." There is a real pressure nowadays, especially on YouTube and social media, to produce footage that is hyper-compelling from a visual standpoint. This often translates to a ton of transitions, dizzying effects, and the like. And while those can sometimes be appropriate in moderation, if they take precedence over conveying the story, it will not matter how visually arresting your story is, your viewers will be left confused. After all, we have a century of great films to look at that didn't employ such effects. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Ramelan.
