This Aerial Video of New York City Was Filmed in Jaw-Dropping 12K

4K is so 2017. This aerial footage of New York City was filmed in astounding 12K.

Coming to you from Phil Holland is "Above NYC," an aerial film that was shot in 12K. As you might imagine, pulling off such a feat was no small task. Holland teamed up with Hangar 95 and Gotham Film Works, who had just received the first SHOTOVER K1 Hammerhead, a six-axis gimbal that holds multiple cameras for stitching panoramas. Holland went all out, putting three RED Monstron 8K VV cameras in the gimbal and pairing them with Tokina 35mm T1.5 cinema lenses. Once the footage was shot and edited together, the result was an absolutely bonkers 12K video (96 megapixels) with an equivalent sensor size that was close to shooting on a 645 medium format camera (at 48 fps, no less).

Unfortunately, YouTube maxes out at 8K (and pretty much no one has a 12K display at the moment), but even the 4K and 8K options are absolutely gorgeous. And at a level of resolution approximately 50 times that of HD, it's not just a stunning technical accomplishment: the ability to crop and recompose while still having more than enough detail for any high-resolution display by today's standards is enormous. Be sure to select the top resolution and use full-screen mode when viewing it!

You can read more about the process and see some great BTS photos on Holland's blog.

Wow. Nice!

I was about to make a "who has a 12k monitor" joke but then I realized that I have triple 4k monitors... But I can't stretch this video to all three so the joke still stands.

But when you do, this'll be the first video you watch! :)

In the year 2040 yes.

You only need six more 4k monitors to get to 12k!

This looks great on my 800x600 pixel monitor

I watched this in 4k on my 5k monitor and I was disappointed..

Just kidding, but awesome video. really cool to be able to fly over the streets like that. I just got some wicked footage of NY from over the Hudson with the drone, but it doesn't come anywhere close to this quality. Also still don't understand how a heli is safer than a drone to be flying over buildings and streets haha

It's a good technical achievement, pushing the available tech to create something we just have to believe exists!
