Tinder for Photographers and Models: Romey.co

Now, photographers and models have their own Tinder-like mobile app called Romey.co. Romey.co is a global marketplace, connecting companies, bookers, models, and photographers where everyone is empowered, and everyone wins, changing the paradigm in an industry notorious for being cutthroat. Models and photographers download the app (iOS and Android) and use it to match intelligently with each other so they can keep active portfolios and network. The app's algorithms match you based on your profile and preferences, so you spend less time searching and more time connecting.

Jerome Rault, the founder of Romey.co, notes:

Romey came out of necessity. I was sick of seeing really great talent simply get left behind because they didn't have the right contacts or knowledge about how to network, grow great portfolios, and get paid jobs. I saw a way that we could help the whole industry, not just the top 0.01% at elite agencies, by creating a marketplace.

Jerome is a Melbourne, Australia based developer and media entrepreneur. He says he built Romey.co so that models, photographers, and companies could be empowered to deal directly with each other and so that effort would be rewarded with paid jobs. He's a filmmaker with a digital advertising and marketing agency called Jerome Rault Media, and back at university, he took some photography classes. “And I loved them,” he says.

As an amateur photographer, I was so keen to network and get shoots going, but I found the process of shout-outs on Facebook or posting castings on websites laborious and ineffective. You're getting contact from all these people, and you spend time getting to know them only to find out they're not right for you, or not available when you are, or not who they pretend to be. It's a nightmare!” Digital Media is my thing, and I knew what to do to make this process easy. I couldn't believe no one had bothered. Of course, it took 14 months to build, so maybe that's why!

Armed with these experiences, he created a global marketplace: Romey.co

I found Romey.co simple to use. It matches photographers and models that have shared interests and availability, so they can organize free collaboration or paid work. Cleverly, Romey.co only connects photographers and models if they like each other's profiles, so no time is wasted on dead ends. If you match, then you just start a conversation for your upcoming shoot right in the app. Cool.

Benefits for Photographers and Models

The app's structure is very similar to well-known social matching app Tinder, but make no mistake, this is serious business. On Romey.co, photographers and models create their profiles, including uploading images that reflect their style, choosing the types of photography they like doing and more. You specify what days and times you are usually available for collaboration and the algorithm will match you depending on your preferred locations, times, and more. Interestingly, both models and photographers are eligible for paid-only work posted through the Romey.co website by companies, and they just opt in to be considered for jobs that interest them — one click job applications! Romey.co doesn't take a commission from talent, but charges a subscription of $5-10 per month to receive paid jobs (we got you a free 12-month subscription, though; see the end of this article).

Benefits for Companies

One of the really commendable things about the Romey.co marketplace is that it encourages paid work. Designers, clothing brands doing catalogs and look books, companies needing headshots or event coverage, couples getting married or whoever cannot (or will not) afford the budgets of production companies and model agencies can post jobs directly to models and photographers listed on the app. Models and photographers just opt in with one click via the app or an email if they want to be in consideration for the job. That's it. The company makes a shortlist from these applicants directly on the website and just connects with the photographers and models they like best. Romey.co charges $10 to post a job to up to 100 models or photographers.

For more complex needs, such as photoshoots with multiple models or photographers, a feature called “Talent Searches” allows companies to generate interest in their brand by creating a viral campaign around photoshoots. Imagine running a Talent Search for the “Face of Your Brand 2016.” Photographers and models who apply are both advocates and potential clients since they readily associate with your brand and are keen to work with you. Romey.co then encourages them to share about you when you promote the Talent Search or announce shortlisted candidates and finalists. It's great for their profile and yours. Plus, you all get to promote the actual photoshoot, while retaining ownership of content based on the terms you set together. You're the boss now — imagine that!

In short, any company or booker who wants to use their own unique images rather than stock images can find models and photographers on Romey.co almost instantly with their own budget and terms set.

More Features and Footnotes

Romey.co is a worldwide app, but it's still pretty light on numbers in some cities. I think it's only a matter of time before every major city fills up, though, since it's free to use. Also noteworthy, when traveling, you can start matching with local talent in advance by changing your search location in the app before you go on a vacation. Profiles you like will be prompted to match with you, and they can see if you have added travel dates. As a traveling photographer with little spare time, I think this is a particularly useful feature.

Most of you may think you already have platforms that you can create casting alerts from (like Model Mayhem), but Romey.co is quite different in its style, usability, and end users. Especially considering the real models who use the app, I recommend giving it a try.

Jerome is offering a free upgrade to Pro or Elite for 12 months to FStoppers readers (this is only for a limited time so get in quick). Mention Fstoppers in your bio and, as long as your profile meets Romey.co standards for each level, he will upgrade you for free.

I can only see 4 models. What a waste.

Hi Jarrett, where are you based? As mentioned in the article we are launching and growing and have limited numbers in many areas. That doesn't mean you can't get access to paid jobs that are posted though.

Doesn't seem to want to work for me, doesn't recognize my city... :(

Hi Jason, which device do you use and where are you based?

Bad first impression

Hi Guys, firstly thanks to Burak for the article. We have had a huge uptake and the profiles are top notch. Which makes me wonder why some people are having these troubles logging in? The location issue is only happening to some users (on Android I think) and many have since been able to move on. We use Google to load locations so it may be a local issue. Please email support@romey.zendesk.com telling us you device type and we will fix it! I'll also post an update here.

Please also support what we are trying to do by creating a marketplace that gets you paid work and empowers you to negotiate on your own terms.

Romey

Thanks to everyone for making us so successful our Google Api (for location searches) crashed!

It's fixed now.

Please close and restart the app, or sign up as intended. Let me know at support@romey.zendesk.com if you had/have trouble with this and I will see what I can do to sweeten your upgrade :) We will be reaching out to talented artists to collaborate of networking events.

Those blue help-boxes keeps popping up over and over and over.... And you have to click to close them one by one over and over and over again to use the app....

Hi Eivind,

navigation prompts should only appear the first time you use a new page. Are you getting them after that? Please email us at support@romey.zendesk.com with the device type you are using.

Same problem for me. iPhone 6s.

Guys, which pages are you getting repeats on? There are 3 to 6 per page, and some appear when you scroll down but once clicked they will not reappear.

Soooo what happens once I check off a model. How do I communicate with them ? How do we get the premium upgrade ?

I can't find it for Apple...

Seems like this app is still under development and with this article we are being asked to do user acceptance test for the company. no impressed

I signed up to check out the interface. Seems like a moderately designed card system. Trying to search within 200KM of my area resulted in 0 results but what I was shown were multiple profiles using stock photography.
Doesn't really seem to "work" just yet since there are not many users. There are also other apps that do this such as "Photo Shoot" that actually have a small selection of users.
I'm assuming this was a sponsored post since typically Fstoppers is pretty keen on what they back. The potential for the app seems good but it just doesn't feel there yet.

Download it and try for yourself. I personally will probably not use it unless there is a massive growth spike.

Hi Brian,

I just wanted to say that this is not a sponsored post. The app started in Melbourne, AU and as a Melbourne based photographer I started using this app - and even shortlisted for a shooting. (I can send you the details via private message if you want) It's normal you don't find any models yet in your area as this is totally a new app. I wanted it to be known by other models and photographers based in different countries, that's why I wrote this post.

Cheers

I had to mention fstoppers in my about as my only way to show and say I'm from fstoppers. Not sure of other ways unless I email/contact them directly.

After reading the comments I see fstoppers is not just an introduction to a new interesting app but also free beta testers... which if it was mentioned originally I wouldn't have mind it at all but now it seems like both the app developer may have intended for this to intensely test the app.

Looks like it has a lot of potential. Anyone know what email address we use to request an upgrade as mentioned in the article?

Please send me your username and email address to support@romey.zendesk.com and I'll upgrade you.

Hi all,

to upgrade your new Romey.co account and get the free 12 months Pro or Elite please make sure you have a bio and at least 5 photos loaded to the app, then just follow these steps: https://romey.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/218286238

If you mention Fstoppers in your bio (for now) we will know you learned of us from this post :) otherwise we may just email you to confirm.

BTW - Romey.co is a very complicated platform (iOS & Android native, plus website). We are young but have big plans (as Burak clearly mentioned in his article). Stick with us. It costs you nothing to be part of a community that is working to get you paid work and empower you. Oh, and if you want to see more talent on the platform sooner, let your friends know! Also, we have the ability to track referrals so if you think you can get the word out hit us up at support@romey.zendesk.com and we'll talk.

This is a nice idea but the app execution is terrible. It just pin wheels of death looking for location. Then when i finally just turned location off it wouldn't let me add location by hand. Was so disappointed that this app is so buggy and should have never been let loose on the world cause you can't even get it in first gear to even give it a try. More than ever ease of use if the key in a day and time when a million apps are available and time is money. Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Hi Dow Jones Photographer, sorry for the hassle you experienced. As mentioned above, this was a Google APi bug and was fixed. Please try again. I know it's a hassle but there are not 'a million apps' like this - there is only one doing what we do. It is hard work, and community based, but we are getting there. Stay with us.

Oookay - perhaps this needs a bit more work...

I created an account via the website, but after installing the app, I can only link it with my personal Facebook account or Instagram account, not with the account I created on romey.com.

When trying to finish the registration through the app (and creating a second account) it searches forever for images on my personal facebook account (which, incidentally has nothing to do with my business), and there seems to be no way to tell it to look elsewhere (e.g. in my local Dropbox app on my phone).

Finally, when I decided to call it quits, there were no way for me to cancel the account that I created via romey.com and no mention of any procedure for doing so in the FAQ.

I like the idea of this app, but like others have said, you probably jumped the gun a bit and right now I just feel like a beta-tester with a broken account and no way to test anything.

Anders, are you a photographer or Company posting jobs? If photog you should be using the mobile app, not the website business login.

Even though I was able to register an account it seems like you are forced to use either your facebook or instagram account to log in. I never use these accounts to log into a different application so is there an option to log in with a romey account?

Hi Robert, please read this article explaining why you must use Insta/Facebook https://romey.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/211911698-Why-do-I-need-to-s...

Thanks Jerome. I see this was just posted today and appears to have been put together in a hurry and it doesn't explain why I "must" use facebook/instagram to log in. If the security of this app is compromised, it can give hackers access to details about me on facebook/instagram.

Secondly, in respect of access to photos, what if the images I want to show on this app are not on facebook/instagram, which is a strong possibility? Do I have to upload them there first? I may not want to do that.

I don't understand why photographers have to use the mobile version. Most photographers spend more time in front of their computers then behind the camera and would benefit from being able to access information via the computer.

I like the idea, but not in it's current form. I'd also like to know how to de-register and close the account I created through the webpage.

Hi Robert, we do not retain any information about your Facebook or Instagram, we just use their API for you to be able to login. You can add images from your phone too. Also, you do have some functionality via the website but not adding photos at this point. Will look into that. If you want to deactivate your account you can do that on the mobile app but that would be very sorry to see you go. We just launched a major upgrade to the android app and it's proving much more stable, we also have new features coming out.

Hope this catches on, because at the moment the only female model I could see is about 1000 miles from where I live :D (south Poland and she is in Rome :D). I get the US/AUS are extra huge markets that will push the app to large traffic, but those markets already have it quite easy since they're huge... maybe you (it's meant for the creators) could be the ones that for once focus on the small and tiny markets of less developed countries in which photographers have to struggle all the time :D (Not being cheeky here, I'm glad that there is even a glimpse of opportunity on the horizon)

Thanks Kornel, we will be reaching out to artists like you over the coming weeks to discuss what we can do about building some networks locally. Rest assured we haven't forgotten Poland!

Mate I feel your pain; Perth West Aust is more than 1000miles from the cultural/fashion heart of Aust ;)

Ok, so far so hoopy - first hit is a Perth, West Aust based model and she's travelling in Melbourne (no biggie) so at least the system works (I think) but other half dozen models were Europe based. Don't have the budget for Berlin based models, thought it would be nice if I did ;)

Ok, less hoopy - I haven't seen a new match of any sort since the first time I logged in two days ago. I have the slider set all the way out to 200km but not sure that matters since, as I said above, I was getting hits from Europe. A little disheartening.

Hi Matt, if you search in Germany for example you see thousands of matches but we haven't taking the time to share around Perth yet! Perhaps that something you could do? It would be really helpful if you told your friends and contacts in industry about Romey.co. We've just added big android update that fixed all the major issues.

I have to ensure my profile has a Bio before aplying for a pro or elite profile, i tried to do so in my browser but i can't put in a bio unless i have a pro or elite profile.. dafuq?

So i tried it on my mobile, but it isn't able to paste my bio into the text field... I'm not going to rewrite my whole bio, i should be able to copy and paste it..

I'm not going or will ever pay for an app like this to be honest.. Apps like this should be free and created to genuinely help creatives, the money will follow later when the app succeeds..
This app seems to be created to make money.. I'm not saying it is, i'm just saying that's how i perceive it ..

The only positive thing about this app is the idea behind it and how easy it is to deactivate your account, which is exactly what i just did..

Hi Peter, not sure why you can't copy and paste. This function works fine for me. Which phone are you using? I understand you want Romey.co to be free, and we are in fact offering it free to Fstoppers for 12 months with no obligation, but keep in mind apps like this cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to build. It is about building community, but communities have to eat! As to the online bio, this is an app driven service and you should make changes in the app (if you intend to use the app ongoing). Jerome.
