It can be easy to fall into using the same lighting setups over and over, and while there is certainly nothing wrong with using the tried and true methods, once you have those down, you might be itching to reinvigorate things a bit. This quick video shows you how a unique lighting setup and a little ingenuity led to these great shots.
Coming to you from Jeff Carpenter of Readylight Media, this great video goes behind the scenes of these interesting portraits in his small home studio.
As you can see in the video, getting the shot actually took very little space and the effects were done in camera, first by using a bit of plastic to blur the bottom left corner of the frame and second by using a spray bottle to help bring out the gelled lights in the background. Whereas a smoke machine could have done this, as Carpenter mentions, the larger particles of the water worked to his advantage, giving the clouds a coarser look. And of course, using a strip light as the key is a bit unusual, but as he explains, it was a very specific choice for this shoot. Check out the video above for the full breakdown of the final shot!

You know nothing mister. It is a wrong shade or blue, it can be really called aquamarine and the other colour is too pink. It is metrosexual lighting. Pink symbolises the emancipation of a man now free to wear pink and aquamarine relates to the ocean, water being another feminine element.
Where on earth are the 50 shades of grey???
To the trained eye, this is obviously Bi-Galactic lighting
