Starting out in photography can offer some harsh lessons, but here are six useful insights and hints that will give you a sense of perspective and potentially improve your images.
Landscape photographer James Popsys has put together a useful series of nuggets that will be of value to anyone who is relatively new to photography.
Pay particular attention to his fourth tip: takes loads and loads of photos. With digital photography and electronic storage, this has never been easier, though of course, be prepared to invest some time into sifting through your images. And this sifting is important. Not only will taking far more photos than you think necessary be a great way of ensuring that you come back with some great images simply through the law of averages, but every image that is a failure is also an opportunity to learn.
You don’t need to consciously note down why a photo has failed (though of course, images that are incorrectly exposed or out of focus will teach you something!), but the act of editing your work will help you to develop your eye. Subconsciously, you will be figuring out what was effective and what fell short, and you will take this growing knowledge with you each time you head out with your camera.
