7 Common Food Photography Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Food photography is a tricky genre that requires a strong sense of composition, great lighting techniques, and a large working knowledge of various tricks of the trade. If you are struggling with your food photography, this excellent video tutorial will show you seven common mistakes and how to avoid or fix them.

Coming to you from Karl Taylor, this great video tutorial discusses seven common food photography mistakes and how to fix them. Of the mistakes, one I notice quite a lot is losing sight of the hero of the shot, as Taylor puts it. Of course, in any genre, you want to be careful to keep the primary focus of the image on the subject; this is not something unique to food work. On the other hand, though, it is particularly easy to lose focus of the subject in food photography simply by virtue of the way it is often approached. Since a lot of the work involves styling the shot to create an enticing atmosphere, often, in the midst of this process, the shot gets a bit too busy and the subject itself gets a bit lost amid everything else. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Taylor.
