Without proper focus, an image simply will not work, which is why it is so important to completely master the skill and know all the different ways you can focus your camera and which method is right for a given situation. This fantastic video will show you seven different ways to focus a photo.

One thing that I think people tend to overlook is the importance of reading the manual for your specific camera. Modern DSLRs and mirrorless cameras often have complex and intricate autofocus systems with various parameters and modes that can vastly increase your keeper rate when properly adjusted, especially when using continuous autofocus. Most come with a default all-purpose mode that performs well across a wide variety of situations, but if you shoot more specialized subjects — a specific sport, for example — you will likely benefit from making some adjustments to things like tracking sensitivity. Sure, it is not the most exciting way to spend an hour, but you will be glad you took the time to read your manual. Check out the video above for the full rundown.
