How to Dodge and Burn Dark Skin Tones

Dodging and burning is both a fantastic way to shape the light in an image and to retouch blemishes; in fact, it is the technique preferred by a lot of high-end retouchers over other more common methods. When working with subjects with dark skin tones, you will want to take note of a few differences in technique compared to working with subjects with lighter skin tones, and this excellent video tutorial will show you everything you need to know.

Coming to you from Kayleigh June, this fantastic video tutorial will show you how to use dodging and burning for retouching a subject with dark skin tones. As June mentions, one of the primary differences is that you will want to primarily use burning as opposed to dodging to help maintain your subject's skin tone. And just like any technique in which you are working near the pixel level, it is generally a good idea to zoom out every few minutes just to take in the overall progress of your work to make sure you are not going overboard with the overall edit so you can keep things looking natural. Check out the video above for the full rundown from June.
