How to Shoot Video Handheld

Shooting with a gimbal is fantastic, it makes all of our footage incredibly smooth and vibration free. However, it’s not appropriate in every scenario and may even kill the mood of your video in some cases as Jakob Owens explained in a previous video. In a new one he posted on his YouTube channel, TheBuffNerds, he teaches now how to shoot handheld. So if you are tired of all the overly stabilized slow-mo footage found on the web nowadays and want to do something different, be sure to watch this tutorial.

No need to go over why shooting everything with a gimbal or some sort of stabilizer isn’t wise all the time. It’s already been explained. But for people used to relying on fancy equipment to shoot, it may be unsettling to film with the camera directly in their hands. Through this short tips and tricks video, Owens explains and demonstrates how he shoots handheld so that you can learn to do the same. As you’ll see, it’s not complicated, but a couple of this methods could make the difference between a jittery result that will make people sick when watching your videos, or footage that looks natural with movements that add to the mood and story.

Very interesting! As a video newbie, I have a tough time letting the story dictate the tools/gear I use as opposed to the other way around. Practice, practice, practice I guess.

Great tips!!

I roll my eyes when someone starts out with 'gimbals suck'.
