A Look at How to Break Out of a Creative Rut

Whether you are a new hobbyist or a seasoned professional, creative ruts are something that happens to all of us, and trying to get out of them can be a frustrating exercise that only makes them worse. If you find yourself mired in a creative rut, check out this helpful video that features a photographer sharing what helped him break free and get back to work.

Coming to you from Thomas Heaton, this awesome video discusses what you can do to break out of a creative rut. As you can see, one of the most effective methods is simply doing something far away from your normal techniques and creative vision. My personal method is to set some sort of arbitrary limitation on myself. What that is does not matter; it can be something as simply as only shooting at f/11 or only using slow shutter speeds. It is not the specifics of the limitation that make the difference; rather, it is that it forces you to engage the problem-solving part of your brain, and in doing so, you overcome the creative block and often, discover some new ideas and techniques to add to your bag of tricks. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Heaton.
