The Most Fundamental Lighting Positions

When you are new to working with artificial light, one of the toughest parts is learning where to actually place the light for proper images. This helpful video will show you several fundamental lighting positions that can help jumpstart your work with strobes.

Coming to you from Daniel Norton with Adorama TV, this great video will show you several fundamental lighting positions. As you might notice in the video, Norton will sometimes turn on his modeling light. This is a low power constant light built into many strobes that can show you where the light is falling and what the shadows will look like, which is really useful when you're placing the light since you can't see what the output will look like otherwise without taking a picture. You'll also notice that Norton is using a single light for these positions. While you certainly might wish to add a second or third light for fill, hair, or the backdrop, you can absolutely get by with these single light setups, and it's actually better to do so at first, as you'll be better able to get an intuitive feel for things like falloff and the like without the complications of additional lights. Check out the video above for the full rundown.

I always enjoy Daniel's videos. Very to the point no nonsense tips. No extra fluff or over stylized content. Would love to pick his brain for a few hours then go have a beer with him.

Would like to see something like this for continuous lights instead of strobes.
