2.12 - "Needs Work"

I started photography approx 1 month ago. We went on a family walk and my daughter fell in a muddy puddle and tears shortly followed. This was taken with a Canon M50 at F1.1 manual focus. I feel this is my best to date. All critique is welcomed, I just want to progress in my photography

Hi Thomas,

Your technique is strong here. Focus, DOF, exposure all look great. This subject matter might be better presented in color though. Using black and white here gives it a vintage feel but also a little bit of a lifeless feel when we are looking at a beautiful child. Color might also explain what is on all her boots. There isn't any water or puddles or mud in the photo. It looks like paint? And I am really sorry to say, I reminds me of the old fashion movie chocolate syrup for blood track. Since this feedback is about the subjective aspects, it is just opinion. I hope it helps. It is given with the genuine hope that this is the case! Last last thing I'll add is, if you are looking for feedback and tips, this isn't the best forum. I recommend joined the groups. The Black and White group would be a great source of feedback. Cheers!

Thankyou Ruth, You have given alot of feedback there, ill try my best to take it all in. I understand what you mean about the colour now, In my mind the BW brought it quite miserable and that was my mindset but to anyone else they have no idea what is actually happening. THANKYOU !!

Hope to see you in the groups. I am the moderator for "Minimalism, Abstract, Experimental" group. You are welcome to post for feedback there. We are opinionated yet kind!

The face needs a little more light and I wish the top part of the image had the same amount of contrast as the bottom I feel the black and white conversion is a bit flat, I think it would be stronger if it had a little bit more contrast in the top half of the image. I would have fixed that with a gradual filter in LR.

Angela, Thankyou for the feedback. I understand your comment with the facial light, may i ask if this could be completed in LR or is this one of them techniques that should be made at the camera ?.
