This image was taken in a remote Balinese village and locks the girls for me so firmly in their environment - they didn't have much, dressed in hand me down clothes and playing made up games. Across their three expressions though, tells a story of kids living in these conditions. The resolute, stoic eldest in the middle with seemingly the weight of the world on her young shoulders. The one on the left with sadness in her eyes such that you wonder what makes her so and the cheekiness and indefatigable quality to smile of the youngest. This portrait, which I took traveling through their village, haunts me still. Nikon D40; F9; 1/250 ISO 1600; 42mm
