These are not more than 10 inches tall, they are send formations in the Death Valley. First time i saw that was in one of Marc Adamus photograph and I had to see it for myself.
To get this type of effect you have to get extremely close to the subject with the widest lens you can as closest to the ground as possible and focus stack the hell out of it.
I replace the sky and I friend of mine hold a light behind the formation to give a star effect. It looks like a landscape from another planet.
