My wife and I were walking the beach on Dungeness Bay; she, looking for shells, me, looking for shorebirds.

I ran into a pair of Oystercatchers wading a rocky tideline searching for morsels in the sand. They did not care about me at all. I worked with them for 30 minutes, maybe more. I left before they did. For all I know, they're still there.

I shot a lot of frames, my gear lent itself to that. But they were all just ordinary. The birds are actually kind of goofy looking from the side and there was nothing particularly interesting about the light or the scenery.

I did find this one series of the bird coming right at me. I cropped this shot tight. I wanted the viewer to find those eyes, first thing. Establish some aggression. The compressed perspective provided by my bird kit pushed his body forward into a Superhero pose.

THE OYSTERCATCHER!
