The image was taken in South Estonia, Võrumaa. The building is my great-grandfather's smoke sauna, a structure rooted in tradition. The smoke sauna tradition in Võrumaa is recognized as part of UNESCO’s World Heritage. This is one of my three best images because of the smoky atmosphere created by the misty weather. The contrast between the cold, bluish tones and the inviting warmth of the sauna evokes a feeling that draws the viewer in.

Some adjustments were made to highlights, shadows, whites, and blacks.

I would never have guessed this was a sauna, which shows how important it is to have a good description for information and education. I'm curious to know what it's like inside.

Smoke saunas are usually completely black inside, and you often get sooty after using them. Heating stove contains big pile of round stones, under which a fire is made. It’s crucial to use dry firewood that doesn’t produce sparks. Heating the sauna typically begins in the morning or around midday. Sauna is well vented before use. Sometimes, smoked hams are also prepared in these saunas.

Fascinating. Thank you for taking the time to explain.
