This photograph captures the grace and storytelling essence of Kathak, one of India’s most revered classical dance forms. The frame celebrates the dancer’s expressive posture, traditional costume, and the timeless rhythm that connects movement with culture and devotion. To preserve the authenticity of the art form, I chose a temple backdrop, allowing the architecture to act as a strong cultural element and a symbol of India’s rich heritage.
The shoot was planned around sunrise, so the lighting was designed to recreate the warmth and direction of early morning light while keeping the subject beautifully defined. I used a two-light setup to balance drama and detail. A Godox AD300 Pro was placed in the background to simulate the rising sun, creating a glowing rim light and adding depth and separation from the surroundings. For the main illumination, I used another Godox AD300 Pro with a 150 cm umbrella as a soft fill light, ensuring smooth skin tones and retaining fine textures in the outfit, jewellery, and facial expressions.

My intention was to create a visually cinematic yet culturally rooted portrait—where Kathak feels alive, powerful, and timeless, framed in a traditional setting with sunrise-inspired light.
