I shot this photo of this kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) diving in the water to catch a fish, during a project over a year. To freeze the action I used 8 flashes, (Nikon SB800); 5 on the bird (left and right 2vs3), 2 for the natural background (Iris pseudacorus) and 1 from behind the bird to the camera, to lit the waterdrops when emerging from the water.
I used a D800 and a Nikkor 200-400mm at 220mm, f5.0, 1/6400sec. Used a flashcord and a SU800 on hi-speed syncing to trigger the flashes. It was quite and installation, but at the end it was al worth it. Beside the flashes I also needed some decent sunlight and in the Netherlands we can have 'some' cloudy periods.
