I shot this kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) on a cloudy day, with a diffused sun, but added 4 flashes on the bird to lit and freeze the action. The flashes were triggered by a SU800 on a cord, at hispeed syncing, flashes need to be at about 1/32 power, that's why you need more than 1.

Camera used was a Nikon D850 with a Nikkor 200-400 at 200mm, f5.6, 1/2000sec, ISO1250.
This is the whole photo, no cropping involved. It takes a lot of practise and patience, a lot of shots which are out of focus or the bird is not in a nice position, but I really like to make this kind of photographs, because you're always surprised with the results.
I already shots the kind of photos in 2002 on a Rollei 6008i on slides, but with the gear nowadays it is a 'little easier'.

An extra detail, you can see it is a juvenile female kingfisher by the lower mandabile (shows female) and the feet, which are not completely bright orange yet (juvenile, hatched about 3-4 months before).

Great shot. I wonder how you know where the bird is going to be so you can set up the flash?

Thank you John, it is a lot of trial and error and concentrating fish underwater.
