I do prefer to strike a noir look in my storytelling work when I use a single light. This scene was imaged on a downtown street in Des Moines IA. When I do “walk abouts”, I bring a two-wheeled cart to which I have mounted a plastic milk crate and the center shaft of a heavy duty light stand. I carry Buff lithium battery packs in that milk crate and other items (for power and to stabilize), and on the light stand I mount a studio light - in this case a 20 degree gridded Alien Bee B800. I elevated the strobe to about 12 feet, angled downward, about 20 feet from the subject, and outside the gate, of course, to produce the hard shadows. The Bee was triggered by Pocket Wizards. Kari and I arranged a dark noirish wardrobe, and we wandered the back ways of Des Moines, popping off a few shots here and there to create a compelling storyline. This particular location was in a fenced area between two building - a perfect location to capture lots of silhouettes and shadows. And, of course, I chose to image this scene with a Dutch angle so effectively used by Welles, to hopefully add a sense of tension and terror. Nikon D700 + Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8
