Is a 70-135mm f/2L Zoom Lens on the Way From Canon?

Is a 70-135mm f/2L Zoom Lens on the Way From Canon?

Canon's RF 28-70mm f/2L lens has been lauded for its great image quality and for pushing the boundaries of optical design. It seems the company may not be done with such lenses, as rumors of an RF 70-135mm f/2L have emerged.

Canon Rumors is reporting that a RF 70-135mm f/2L lens is currently in testing, with an announcement date sometime near the end of the year. Rumors of an RF 16-28mm f/2L lens have been floating around for about a year, and it would certainly be mightily impressive if Canon could complete a holy trinity of f/2 lenses. Of course, it would not have the same range as a traditional f/2.8 holy trinity of zooms (16-200mm), but if you have ever seen the size of a 200mm f/2 prime lens, you'll know right away that any sort of zoom lens trying to get to 200mm while maintaining an f/2 aperture would be prohibitively bulky and expensive. Even with the reduced range, the idea of a 16-135mm f/2 holy trinity is certainly quite exciting and could rewire the way a lot of photographers think about their choice between prime and zoom lenses. The EF 135mm f/2L is one of the most beloved in Canon's history, but at 24 years old, it is certainly ready for a refresh.

id love a 50-85 f/2 art lens to go with my 24-35 f/2 for weddings. excellent duo for 85% work

some flexibility but high prime level IQ. a 70-200 for the long end and a 17-35 on the short end and im set.

I think this could make for a good trinity. With a x1.5 converter that would give you 202mm... surely an extender is in the works too?

No thanks. With modern sensors there is less reason to buy fast primes (F/1.2) or zooms (F/2.0).
Make a great set of cheap, compact and lightweight F/1.8 primes and F/4.0 zooms.

I disagree. With only a 35mm prime you have already a nice camera to begin with. Ad a 24mm and 85mm and your good to go for a lot of situations. Doesn't have to cost a fortune, €500-€600 each.
With this F/2.0 you already spent thousands of euro's on 1 lens and it's big and heavy.

so you decided for the world

Everyone no name says your primes are worthless. Dont buy or use them. They are all dead
I didnt know primes were alive
And why arent you wearing a mask?
And make sure to keep your distance from yourself. You may infect yourself with more ridiculous things to say

Kind of an odd focal length 70-135? I love 135mm and 70mm is used quite a bit on my zooms, but in between 70-135 just seems kinda lost to me. I'd much prefer the Tamron 35-150 even with the variable aperture, just seems more useful.

I wouldn't consider this lens since I have the excellent 70-200 f2.8. What I would like to see would be 100mm f1.4 from Canon.

Me too. With the quality of 85 f/1.4 or higher, I would buy one.

Seems like this is aimed at the video capabilities of the upcoming R5. The EF 70-105mm f/4L IS is a go to for a lot of run and gun videography. Looks like they were able to make this lens faster by cutting out the IS, which is made up for by the R5's IBIS. It'll be a no brainer for anyone who's planning to shoot run and gun video on the R5.

That’s a good point. And surely there will be an RF C body at some point too.

Who needs so much extreme zoom of 1.9x. hahaha, lol
