Canon has fully unveiled the EOS R3, a full frame mirrorless camera with a 24.1-megapixel backside-illuminated sensor that shoots continuously, black-out free, at up to 30 frames per second. The R3 will go on sale at $5,999.
Canon has been teasing customers over the last couple of months, revealing some details but holding off on a few key specifications such as the resolution. The backside-illuminated 24.1-megapixel sensor is Canon’s first, allowing the camera’s impressive 30 frames per second with reduced rolling shutter.
According to its press release, the R3 “bridges the gap between the immensely popular EOS R5 and the world-renowned Canon flagship EOS-1D X line.” In addition, it shoots 6K 60p raw and 4K 120p 10-bit uncropped video with Canon Log 3 support, and IBIS means that paired with certain lenses, the R3 offers up to 8 stops of stabilization.
The release also emphasizes the R3’s use of deep-learning technology that gives it greater performance in terms of eye and body detection. The 5.76 million-dot EVF will allow users to select an area for autofocus tracking “by simply looking directly at the viewfinder location where they want to begin AF.”

The R3 is due to be available for purchase in November and will cost $5,999.
Wonder how long they'll announce their Sony a1 competitor after releasing the R3. Clearly going after the A9 with this.
Canon on steroids! How long have we complained about Canon's either inability or unwillingness to innovate: to produce the cameras we've been asking for. This arms race between Canon and Sony can only be good for us. But, damn! If the R3 costs $6K, hang on to your hats as to what the R1 will go for.
