Canon's EOS R5 and R6 cameras have been very popular and well received, while the EOS RP and EOS R help to round out the lower ens of the company's mirrorless lineup. However, besides the upcoming flagship model, one notable absence is an APS-C model, but it now seems likely we will see such a camera next year.
Canon Rumors is reporting that currently, an APS-C RF mount camera is being tested by certain photographers. Such a camera is very likely to be the EOS R7, the mirrorless equivalent to the 7D Mark II. The 7D line has always been highly popular. As the flagship of the company's APS-C line, it offers amateurs a chance to step into more advanced capabilities without dropping a ton of money on a full frame camera, and for professionals, it makes for a great second body or alternate camera for when one needs more reach without sacrificing other features. Personally, I have always loved my 7D Mark II; it has been a fantastic companion to my main body when shooting baseball, especially when I need extra reach to shoot the far end of the field. But it is getting a bit long in the tooth, and a version with an updated sensor and mirrorless features would definitely be welcome. As of now, it looks like we can expect that version sometime in 2021.
So there's the EOS-M line, which uses special smaller lenses or EF lenses with a mount adapter. There's the EOS R cameras which are mirrorless with a full frame sensor, which can use an EF-S lens, but it once again needs an adapter.
Yields on full frame sensors are pretty darn good by now, and it just seems at least to me like if you're trying to take pictures with a smaller sensor that you might as well just enable crop sensor mode on a full frame camera. Seems like it would be a bit of a waste to put a crop sensor in a full frame mirrorless form factor, but that's just me.
You are aware the crop mode in FF cameras reduces the resolution, right? You’d need quite a high megapixel camera for the crop mode to have reasonable resolution (my 24mp A7III isn’t high enough for this) and that means an expensive camera like the R5 or A7RIV. Not everyone has that sort of money to spend. If a mirrorless 7D is reasonably priced then it could just well be an attractive option for some people.
Yes. Of course. We know this. For pure practicality, how about an R6 with a 1.4x teleconverter in the package? Checks literally all the boxes, and you only lose 1 stop of light.
I think that with the R6 being 20mp it opens the door to APS-C rumours.
Smart move on Canon's part if it happens. The 7D series was quite successful. No reason that an R7 shouldn't be as well. In good light, wouldn't it be a hoot to pop on the 800mm f11? :-)
If they don't cripple an R7 APS-C camera's sensor, that is compared to the R6.
IF they release it, I'll buy it. I got tired of waiting on the 7D III and bought an 80D. Other than picture quality it can't compare with the 7 series. We need one yesterday.
I still have my 7D II, but got an SL2 (200D) secondhand whose sensor scores the same as the 80D in dxomark, it has even more limitations. The picture quality is better for still life, floral, portrait etc, but can't compare to the 7D II for capturing action. Interestingly the sensor in the SL3 (250D) scores much lower than the SL2.
So true. Was walking the woods yesterday and set my 80D to record only RAW. It just can't pack 'em in like a 7 series. On paper it sounds good but in real life it's lacking in packing away the images. Switched back to JPG fine and it worked well. The focusing is fast enough and even tracks very well but with no real way to pack in the RAW images it's basically a JPG shooter.
Here’s a though— tweak the R5’s cooling first, call it R5C for “cool”, call it anything, I don’t care! THEN introduce a new product. Sounds reasonable?
