Canon Is Planning 'Big Things' to 'Astonish' Photographers With Their Mirrorless System

Canon's EOS R mirrorless camera system has been met with mixed reviews, but Canon is pressing on with the system and expects to expand it. In particular, they recently said to "expect big things."

In speaking with DPReview, Canon engineers had a lot of interesting things to say, highlighting how in particular, the new RF mount will allow them to create some previously challenging or impossible lens designs, such as the new RF 28-70mm f/2L lens. Speaking more generally, the engineers said: "We want to surprise and astonish you, so please expect big things." While it's highly likely the EOS R was not meant as the flagship camera of their mirrorless line and we'll see more capable models released as time goes by, companies like Sony and Fuji have made some remarkable products in their own respective ways, and they've also had several years to refine them. Thus, it'll be quite interesting to see how Canon plans to "astonish photographers." Certainly, lenses like a professional-level f/2 standard zoom are a good start. Either way, it's a great time to be a consumer, as the choices and competition continue to grow.

The Fujifilm X-T3 slays both the EOSR and Z7, even with it's APS-C sensor.

No thanks. I upgraded from crop censor cams for a reason--mainly better dynamic range and depth of field control--and have no interest in moving laterally. I do very much like their analog controls and overall feel, though. I wish I had one, but it can't be my only cam.

I'd love to get a Fuji, but I wouldn't want to take a step backwards to a crop sensor. However, the GFX50s would be a very welcome piece of hardware. It would fit very well with most of what I shoot.

well, about the 28-70/2 L...
isn't that "big" enough?

Are the 5D4 and 1Dx2 the last of the pro-DSLR bodies?

Canon likes to introduce new flagship bodies just in time for the Olympics. With the recent EOS R system announcement, it’s apparent that Canon has been preparing for a big change. I suspect an EOS "1Rx" sports body will be introduced in time for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. This is an opportunity for Canon to top Sony’s A9. And if they do, Sony’s future in the still photo business looks bleak since they lack the investment in the glass (and flash) that would move lots of photographers to invest in Sony.

Given the EOS R announcement, the tease of the possibilities that the EOS R body represents, the timing of the Olympics, and competition offered by Sony, I expect to be astonished in the next 12-18 months.

You'll be astonished when we catch up to 2016 Sony mirrorless.

Having lived in Japan for 15 years and spent a lot of time with workers from almost all Japanese camera companies, I would be very surprised if these guys spoke English as fluently as the interview suggests. I can't find evidence of it in the DPReview article, but I'm pretty confident words such as 'astonish' were translated/interpreted by someone sent along from the marketing dept. at Canon. My wife's Japanese and speaks perfect English and she doesn't even know the word astonish - in English or Japanese haha!!

So i have a crop lense and have been waiting to see what the mirrorless line would be open to me for a full frame option. I just dont get it right now. I may be missing something here but i had expected the full frame mirrorless cameras to be much lighter but when u consider the lens they r not. I recently went to a talk on the new R and people there had their 5 Ds and the weight comparison against the R without any lenses was practically the same. It seems to me that canon threw together the 5D sensor with the flip screen on the 6Dii (i had it on the 70D and love it) and added some improvements ie all those AF points.
