Canon Releases More Specs of the Impressive EOS R3 Mirrorless Camera

Canon has released more information on the upcoming EOS R3 camera, with a variety of specs now available that give us more information on what to expect, as well as a gallery of new images of the upcoming camera.

We already know some of the headline features of the EOS R3, which include flagship-level dust- and weather-resistance, a newly developed stacked CMOS sensor with a back-illuminated design for faster readout speeds (resulting in less rolling shutter), 30 fps continuous burst rate, and eye-controlled autofocus.

The new specs give us some more insight into what we can expect from the camera, including:

  • Multi-Controller and Smart Controller
  • Vari-Angle touchscreen
  • New accessory shoe
  • Wired LAN 5 GHz Wi-Fi
  • 30 fps electronic shutter with AF and AE tracking
  • AF down to -7 EV
  • 4K Canon Log3
  • 8 stops Coordinated Control IS with Optical IS and In-Body IS
  • Oversampled 4K
  • Internal raw video
  • Car and motorbike AF tracking modes
  • Speedlite shooting with electronic shutter
  • LP-E19 battery
  • Multi and smart controller equipped
  • Magnesium alloy body
  • SD and CFExpress dual card slots

Gordon Laing got some time with camera; you can check out the video above to hear his thoughts. It looks like Canon fans have a lot to be excited about!

Almost everything except what sensor size which unfortunately might be 20MP again.

I doubt it but you are right, after the R6, expect anything. I don't know if they can use a slightly larger sensor with their lens lines but to be this close to release and holding the sensor detail, I could see something happening in that direction.

Should be around 24 if they're doing 4k oversampling. There is no point to do an oversampling if the crop is around 1.3x (like ~20Mpx). The 1.5x is where it starts. I was expecting an 8k and 45Mpx. Bummer.

Impressive looking stuff so far! As a previous owner of both the 1DX and 1DX mk2 and also rented the mk3 I’m very pleased to see canon starting to build physically smaller and hopefully considerably lighter professional grade cameras now I just hope this trend is followed with future mirrorless cameras especially the pro grade ones. I’d also like to see canon do away with mechanical shutters altogether as they not only wwear out in time but hinder the burst speeds achieved with electronic shutters and are much quieter too. My other wish is that the company considers using solid state batteries rather than Li on batteries in future cameras as these charge quicker and are less likely to explode! I do hope the R1 implements a global shutter, that would be an absolute game changer!

I am hoping for built in GPS. Built in intervalometer.

They certainly need a built-in and accurate GPS - the move to drop the GPS in the R5 is catastrophic as far as I am concerned. I have tried linking my phone to the R5 and I get coordinates in the Exif data on about 1 in 30 images - not good at all !! I shoot wildlife photos and need a GPS to accurately place my shots for future reference and to enter into biological recording and GIS applications. I have n R5 but currently it is VERY under-used due to the lack of a GPS and I am still using my 5D Mk-IV because it DOES have a GPS.

No mention of blackout free shooting makes me think they haven't solved rolling shutter either. Shame.
